Melrose SevensMorgan Academy RFC’s golden oldies team is to set to compete at the prestigious Mathon Melrose Sevens, the ‘home’ of the abbreviated game around the world. Last year, the club won the Bowl competition.

The Dundee side is to play in the Davidson Chalmers Melrose 7s Veterans Tournament, alongside a host of other clubs from Orkney in the north to Ledbury in Hertfordshire in the south – and an invitational side from the Cayman Islands.

The international event spanning Friday 9th and Saturday 10th April is also set to be a celebration of the Armed Forces in tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Scottish and British services personnel around the world – with Poppy Scotland, the former Earl Haig fund, taking centre stage for the weekend.

The veterans’ tournament, which has free admission and free car-parking, will have catering and bar facilities, and is expected to draw in supporters from across the UK – and from around the world.

For the main event on Saturday 10th April, the British Army sevens team, which competes in the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham and features a host of Fijians based in Edinburgh, will be a guest side.

Mike Dalgetty, Melrose RFC President, said “there is a very real sense among people about how much our soldiers are putting on the line in the name of serving this country, and we are using the occasion to celebrate the strong links with our Scottish regiments going back over many years.”

They will be competing against other British and invitational sides, which this year will feature Italians Milano and the Hamilton club from Cape Town in South Africa, which continues the Borders club's links with the Republic, alongside the returning 2009 winners, Johannesburg University. It was the fourth time in six years that a South African side had lifted the trophy, following in the footsteps of Stellenbosch University (2004 and 2005) and Free State University (2007).

Due to the continuing popularity of the tournament it is likely to be a sell-out, and to avoid disappointment, visitors are advised to book tickets early.

Confirmed teams for the Davidson Chalmers Melrose 7s Veterans Tournament are:
Orkney RFC, Ledbury RFC, Melrose RFC, Edinburgh Academical FC, Millbrae RFC, Cayman Islands, Morgan Academy RFC, Alnwick RFC, Madras Rugby Club, Puffin Gannets, and Glasgow Hawks RFC.

The veterans’ tournament, now in its third year, will consist of teams of ten players, with clubs eliminated being entered into subsidiary Bowl and Plate events.  Last year, the competition was won by the Border Reivers, the Bowl by Morgan Academy, and the Plate by Ledbury.

“Melrose RFC would like to extend a warm welcome to teams competing in the veterans’ tournament and main event , and to their travelling supporters, for what will be a fun and colourful event,” said Douglas Hardie, marketing convenor for Melrose RFC.

Team members and supporters who want to extend their stay and attend the main event the following day, should book tickets at www.melroserugbyshop.co.uk.  Details of Hospitality packages are available from Douglas Hardie ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it )
