anxiousPioneering workshops aimed at helping staff beat the January blues are being held in
Dundee this month.

The event will help employers deal with what is officially the most depressing day of the year (Monday 21 January 2008) and spot other year-round workplace symptoms blighting the nation’s workforce.

The ‘Blue Monday’ phenomenon follows research by Dr Cliff Arnall from the University of Cardiff and typically falls on the Monday of the last full week of January.

On Friday 18 January, Dundee and Fife human resources and counselling experts will hold an interactive workshop for small to medium sized businesses (companies with up to 250 employees). The event will tackle everything from spotting signs of stress and depression to motivating and improving communications, reducing the rash of absenteeism affecting businesses throughout the country.

Jeni McCabe, Senior consultant at Dundee-based HR consultancy Simple Corporate Resource Solutions said, “The most depressing day is the hook we’re hanging the event on as problems can arise with the festivities being over, 'real life' resuming, foul weather, first credit card bills of the year coming through our doors, and so on. But, in reality, these symptoms cause year-round headaches for employers. Our event will help delegates prevent and treat these common workplace ailments. There’s no doubt that a happy workforce is a productive workforce”.

The event will also involve input from Kirkcaldy-based InterActions, who provide counselling and support services to individuals, businesses and other organisations.

George Davidson, counseller at InterActions said, “We are joining forces as we both support employers on stress and depression issues in different ways. SCRS can help with team building, morale and absence management to help prevent absence and reduce the costs of it, and we can offer counselling on a one-to-one support basis to get to the root of the problem and deal with it”.

The event will take place at the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, City Quay, Dundee from 1pm until 4.30pm on Friday 18 January. To book a place on the workshops, or for more information on SCRS’ services and programme of events this year, email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or phone Jeni McCabe on 07899 933 089.

Simple Corporate Resource Solutions offer a range of HR and employment law support and advice on issues from recruiting and motivating staff, to dealing with staff absence and disciplinary matters.

1. Cheers
Cheers SCRS! Managers should be more aware of how to spot signs of stress and support employees who suffer from it. I am a business owner and the costs of stress are unbeleivable! IF managers are better trained, they can help reduce the costs. Looking forward to your next events and have registered on your website to be kept informed.

Cheers
Dawn.
