Lonely SparrowPeople in Dundee are being asked to spend an hour of their time next weekend (30-31 January) watching wildlife in their garden or local park, to help out with the RSPB's annual Big Garden Bird Watch. 2010 marks the 31st anniversary of the original Bird Watch, and the event has grown into the biggest garden wildlife watching event in the world, helping to provide vital information about how some of our best loved species are faring.

Last year, the house sparrow was the most common garden bird, just above the blackbird and the starling. On average, 4.2 sparrows were spotted in each garden, and were present in 63% of gardens, beating the blackbird (3.02, 91%) and the starling (2.95, 36%).

RSPB Scotland Big Garen Birdwatch organiser Jonathan Osborne said:
"The big garden bird watch has grown massively since 1979 when we first organised it. People that haven't taken part before will find it a really enjoyable way to bring the whole family together for just an hour, to learn more about the wealth of wildlife that we'rer lucky to have."

"The record number of people to have taken part in Scotland is just under 30 000, out of a UK total of almost 400 000, so this year we really want to break through that 30 000 barrier for the 30th anniversary."

"It's really easy to get a form for results, as well as a guide to recognising the most common birds, either at http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch, or by phoning us on 0300 456 8330. The sheer number of results that we get helps us to understand how some of our common birds like the robin, blackbird and chaffinch are faring."

Footnote by the Editor
This has got to be a great opportunity for camera owners to get out and about at the weekend, birds are a great subject to photograph and you can and up with some excellent images while taking part in the survey.

As an added incentive we will publish the best photographs submitted by readers.
