Letham Victorian Market

Written by Stefan Pocula

LethamLetham Victorian Market takes place on the traditional 1st Sunday in July. This is the nearest Sunday to the date of the village of Letham's creation in 1787.

Letham is about 200 years old and was planned and designed by George Dempster to house the much needed workers to run his estates.

Arriving in the village we discovered people wearing Victorian costume, the atmosphere made the day a special occasion.

A man who looked like the local greengrocer, was plying his trade next to a lady dressed in a lovely Victorian dress with bonnet and shawl who was selling kilts, sporrans and everything Scottish

Potatoes, eggs, strawberries, home-made cakes, and soaps produced locally were in abundance, there were even stalls selling bric a brac, hand-made jewellery, and original paintings by a local artist.

A Dance Team of Morris Men from Aberdeen provided the entertainment, it was unusual to say the least, they were very entertaining and colourful in their costumes and a number of dance routines were over 400 years old.

Suddenly the weather closed in and became overcast and started to rain we headed back to the car, we found it a very pleasant day out and thoroughly enjoyed the occasion of a Victorian market.
