A Dundee business is encouraging van drivers to check their vehicles after the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) reported that nearly half of all light commercial vehicles fail their MOT* first time.
The alarming figure highlighted that thousands of van owners face unnecessary repair costs and as well as potential loss of business, as their vehicle remains out of action for longer than expected whilst repairs are carried out.
Joe McCauley, head of business at Clark Commercials Dundee, reviewed the DVSA report which revealed that 49 per cent of all light commercial vehicles in the UK fail first-time MOT tests, of which, 45 per cent were caused by simple-to-fix faults that could be picked up during routine maintenance checks
He said: “It is worrying to discover that pass rates have increased by just one per cent over the last three years and that in most cases simple things such as faulty bulbs, (32.2 per cent) and worn tyre treads (4.8 per cent) were at fault.
“These figures clearly show that a lack of regular vehicle maintenance is proving to be a false economy for some UK van owners when it comes to MOT time.”
A further 40 per cent of failures were caused by brake or suspension wear (24.8 per cent and 16.1 per cent respectively).
The three main causes of MOT failures – lighting and signalling, brakes and suspension – have remained constant over the past three years, with very little variance in the number of vehicles affected by these problems. While braking issues and tyre defects have shown a slight improvement since 2012, the number of suspension and lighting and signalling faults has risen.
Joe added: “To see such a small improvement over the past three years is very worrying. The road-worthiness of a vehicle is vitally important. Company owners could face hefty fines or even a prison term if their vehicle was involved in an accident and was deemed below standard.
“To help prevent unnecessary bills for our customers and the potential negative impact on overall resale value due to the vehicle not having been properly looked after, we carry out an express visual check on every van that we service.
“This allows us to identify any possible problem areas or MOT failure risks so customers have the added peace of mind that their vehicle is as safe as possible.”
As part of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle express visual check the following areas are inspected: headlamps and indicators, brake lights, wheels and tyres, seats and seatbelts which are all assessed for operation and wear.
In addition, Clark Commercials Dundee routinely offers a free fitting service on a number of items including bulbs and wiper blades.
